A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

AG & Rural Youth Grant Application Available

Agricultural and rural youth grant applications are available for innovative projects in aquaculture, animal science, food safety and other agriculturally-related topics. The application deadline is October 31st.

Projects considered for direct grants could amount up to $2,500.  Project proposals should demonstrate relevance to agriculture or rural issues and should show originality and community impact. For direct grants, applicants must provide a detailed description of the project to be funded, a reasonable and accurate statement of the estimated project cost and a copy of the official youth organization board minutes where action was taken on the proposed project. In addition to the requirements for the direct grants, matching grant applicants must also provide a description of the source of the organization's matching funds contribution to the project.

The program provides funding to youth organizations that are recognized by the Commonwealth to promote development in the areas of agriculture, rural community leadership, vocational training, or peer fellowship.

For more information visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us or contact Kristi Rooker at 717-346-4202 or krooker@state.pa.us. For information regarding other possible grants contact my office at 301 E. Main Street,  Lititz, PA or by phone at 717-627-0036.

PennDOT launches Keystone Line Website

If you are looking for ways to save time, gas, and frustration in your daily commute, the new Harrisburg-to-Philadelphia Keystone Line Website might be of interest to you.  The website www.CatchTheKeystone.com is an interactive source that provides schedules and ticket information, as well as station hours and train amenities.

The Commonwealth completed a $145 million joint effort with Amtrak and the Federal Transit Administration to upgrade service on the 104-mile line. With the track and signal improvements, the line offers 90-minute express service between Harrisburg, Lancaster and Philadelphia.

Along with the Website, an advertising campaign featuring "monsters" to avoid by taking the train will help promote the use of the site and rail line.

Students to help aviation industry "Go Green"

Pennsylvania high school students will hone their science and technology skills while helping to solve real-world challenges facing the aviation industry under a public-private partnership. The "Real World Design Challenge," a national competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, will enable high school students to work alongside industry and government experts to learn engineering skills through problem solving.

The Real World Design Challenge enables high school students to take on engineering challenges in a team environment by asking them to address an issue facing one of the nation's leading industries. This year's challenge focuses on more efficient energy use in aeronautics.

Teams of students and a teacher will develop solutions to the challenge, and those solutions will be evaluated by scientists, engineers, college and university faculty and teachers. The best solution in each state will be announced by each governor at an awards ceremony, and the winning team in each state will compete in a national challenge held in Washington, D.C.

To aid the effort, high school teachers trained in design and global engineering will each receive approximately $1 million worth of professional engineering software donated by the Parametric Technology Corporation and Flomerics Inc. The Department of Energy and the Federal Aviation Administration will provide science and engineering mentors, and Hewlett-Packard will provide computer servers to host the software and facilitate collaboration between participants.
