A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

September is National Preparedness Month

I would like to take a moment to remind you that this month is national preparedness month and to remember three simple steps: be informed, be prepared and be involved. Pennsylvanians should pay attention to news reports and follow instructions given by state and local officials during an emergency. Important information will be broadcast using the emergency alert system.

All Pennsylvanians should prepare themselves and their families for a minimum of 72 hours after an emergency. Each household should have a plan to communicate with loved ones and to reunite if they become separated during a disaster, know when to evacuate or stay in their home or building and have an emergency kit with essential necessities for every person and pet in their household.

The Commonwealth will unveil a new awareness campaign, called ReadyPA, this month as part of its National Preparedness Month activities. The campaign includes, a new Web site that will serve as a clearinghouse for emergency preparedness information in Pennsylvania; television and radio public service announcements; and a toll-free phone number to provide information and resources for those without internet access.

For more information about preparing for an emergency, review the Pennsylvania emergency preparedness guide by visiting www.pema.state.pa.us or www.health.state.pa.us or by calling 1-877-PA-HEALTH. Information about National Preparedness Month is available from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at www.ready.gov. A guide to preparedness is available at my district office at 301 East Main Street, Lititz, PA 17543.

Shiloh Farms donates to Harrisburg mission

Shiloh Farms, of New Holland, Pennsylvania, is donating 312 loaves of its Organic Sprouted Seven Grain Bread to the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The donation is part of a national Whole Grains Giveaway sponsored by Boston-based Whole Grains Council to make sure healthy whole grain foods reach all members of our society.

The Bethesda Mission is a 94-year-old cross-denominational organization that provides food, shelter, clothing and counseling to hungry and homeless people in the Harrisburg area. Shiloh Farms' products are available at fine health food markets in the Northeast – including more than 65 in New York City alone– and online at www.shilohfarms.com.

Disability Assistance at work

The Pennsylvania Assistive Technology and Employment Collaborative is a network of Pennsylvania organizations that provides information to employers and others on assistive technology and how it can help individuals with disabilities in employment. Other services include understanding the employer's responsibility for providing assistive technology and how to locate technology devices and services. Initial funding for this Collaborative was provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Disability and Employment Policy.

The mission of the Pennsylvania Assistive Technology and Employment Collaborative is to educate employers on the benefits of and resources for workplace assistive technology. The purpose of the Collaborative's efforts is to increase the likelihood that assistive technology devices and services will be utilized as workplace accommodations to recruit, hire, retain, and advance employees with disabilities.

Free trainings from the Collaborative about the scope and benefits of assistive technology as workplace accommodations are available for human resources professionals, small business owners, industries, business organizations, and other employers throughout Pennsylvania. The duration and content of the training can be customized for the employer's needs, and trainings can be held at the employer's location.

For more information regarding the Collaborative, visit their website at www.disabilities.temple.edu/programs/assistive/atwork/.
