For Immediate Release A Conversation with Senator Brubaker Smoking ban taking effect I would like to remind everyone that the Clean Indoor Air Act (CIAA) smoking ban begins Thursday, September 11. The ban includes all "public places." They are defined as an enclosed area which serves as a workplace, commercial establishments or an area where the public is invited and permitted. This includes mass transportation stations and mass transportation vehicles, sports and recreational facilities, schools, restaurants, healthcare facilities, nightclubs and performance spaces. The bill allows for some exceptions, including a private residence (except those licensed as a child-care facility), a private social function where the site involved is under the control of the sponsor (except where the site is owned, leased, or operated by a state or local government agency) and a wholesale or retail tobacco shop. It also imposes penalties for those establishments in noncompliance, as well as those individuals smoking in prohibited areas. A person (patron or employee of the premises) may be penalized for smoking where it is prohibited in amounts ranging from $250 for a first offense to $1,000 for a third offense within twelve months. Kits for local businesses and information regarding the CIAA and its requirements are available at www.health.state.pa.us or at my district office at 301 East Main Street, Lititz, PA 17543. Local events of interest On Saturday, September 20, from 10 am to 1 pm a free and valuable "How-To" workshop will be held at the Columbia Market House. Topics will include brickwork, roofing, windows and doors, porches, painting, flooring and energy efficiency. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions regarding your own projects. The workshop is sponsored by the Columbia Historic Architectural Review Board and the borough, with support of the Richard C. Von Hess Foundation. For more information, contact the Columbia Borough at 717.684.2468. On Wednesday, September 17, and Wednesday, September 24, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm there will be an altered books workshop at the Lititz Public Library. The "green" program allows your creativity to flow while recycling the library's discarded books. Participants are asked to bring paper pad, and pen to jot notes, x-acto knives, scissors, pinch type clothes pins, as well as other supplies. If you are interested in learning more about the program, call 717.626.2255. Red Rose offers 25-cent rides through September For the month of September the Red Rose Transit Authority will be offering 25 cent bus rides for all routes. This offer is a great opportunity to save money and help the environment by reducing the number of visits to the gas pump this month. It is also a way to see parts of Lancaster County with which you might not be familiar. Customers who ride often during September and don't want to carry lots of quarters throughout the month can opt to purchase a Monthly Pass for a discounted price of $10.00. The discounted price is equivalent to 40 rides at 25 cents. The $10.00 cost will apply to all Monthly Passes in all zones. There is also a program in place for seniors who are 65 and older. Bus schedules are available at my district office at 301 W. Main Street in Lititz, or by visiting the RRTA website at www.redrosetransit.com. | ||
