For Immediate Release A Conversation with Senator Brubaker Take a swing against breast cancer The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition and the Pennsylvania Community Bankers are teaming up with 11 minor league baseball teams, including the Lancaster Barnstormers, and sponsors across the state to raise awareness and funds to treat, prevent and find a cure for breast cancer. During the month of July, corporate and individual teams will participate in a day-long home-run derby, with winners recognized that evening before the game in the stadium of play. Each team will receive hats, jerseys, commemorative baseballs and a souvenir team photo. The fundraising campaign will support education and advocacy, as well as direct uninsured women with breast cancer who are of low or moderate income to free treatment. Approximately 9,500 Pennsylvania women are diagnosed each year with the disease, which is the most common cancer in women. I encourage anyone interested to put together a team for the event at Clipper Magazine stadium in Lancaster on July 26 as we try to help the Coalition reach its $1 million goal across the state. To learn how you can play, watch, or volunteer, visit www.pahomerunderby.org for more information. The Coalition's Executive Director can also be reached at 800-377-8828 or heather@pabreastcancer.org. Legislation would provide for continued collection of health care information Since 1986, the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, also known as PHC4, has been collecting and analyzing health care data, providing a valuable resource to the Commonwealth. The PHC4 is also responsible for studying the issue of access to care for the uninsured and reviewing proposed and existing mandated health insurance benefits upon request. However, the original law creating the Council expired on June 30, and needs reauthorization by the General Assembly to continue to fulfill its mission of focusing on rapidly growing health care costs. I strongly support legislation which would change the sunset date of the Health Care Cost Containment Act to June 30, 2018, because I believe the Council has been very useful in addressing the cost and quality of health care through the dissemination of timely information. The extension of the sunset date of the Act will ensure there is no interruption of the Council's work, allowing for the continued provision of reliable health care information and helping to contain health care costs and improve health care outcomes. This is a very important tool for our ability to accurately address these issues in the General Assembly, and I am pleased that we are giving this due consideration. Community Spotlight It was my pleasure recently to introduce 10-year-old Annie Hess of Lititz to the Senate and talk about her special project, Project American Pride. Annie's brother is in the United States Navy, and her family proudly displays the American flag everywhere they can. While riding in the car, though, Annie noticed that not many people shared her passion for displaying the flag, and she set out to spread some American pride. To do so, Annie emailed individuals asking them to put flags out, and also hands out flyers asking people to help share her message. Recently, Giant grocery stores donated flags to hand out at events, and I was pleased to help her distribute some on Flag Day. I encourage everyone to get involved in this special project and take time to display a flag, both for Independence Day and every day throughout the year. | ||
