A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Expanded workforce services available

The Commonwealth Workforce Development System (CWDS) offers quick and convenient access to a wide range of services for employers and job seekers as well as job training organizations.

CWDS replaced the state's previous online system, known as PA CareerLink, in September, and in doing so, is able to offer even more services to Pennsylvanians. For instance, CWDS can be used by employers to market job openings online and to screen applicants. It can also connect businesses with training that will help reduce turnover, increase efficiency and keep ahead of technological changes.

Job seekers can use CWDS to post their resumes free of charge, and can find information about job fairs and recruiting services in their areas. The system also offers specialized services for veterans, individuals with disabilities, older workers and job seekers with language needs.

In addition, CWDS provides information about various labor markets, economic and demographic trends, and economic development funding. All online services are supported by experts at local PA CareerLink offices and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

To take advantage of the services available through CWDS, you can visit the web site at www.cwds.state.pa.us. The PA CareerLink Lancaster County office can also be reached at 1016 N. Charlotte Street, Lancaster, 17603, or by calling 717-299-7631.

PennDOT urges safe winter driving

The state Department of Transportation recently released a new winter driving guide and a new online travel information section to aid Pennsylvania motorists traveling this winter.

The new online travel information section provides a variety of useful tools and can be accessed by going to www.dot.state.pa.us and clicking on "Travel Information" in the middle of the page. This site includes current weather-related travel conditions and closures on Pennsylvania interstates, which are updated every 15 minutes. You can also see PennDOT traffic cameras for some areas of the Commonwealth, roadway weather information systems and real-time weather conditions. If you are away from your computer, you can also get interstate condition information through a new toll-free hotline at 1-888-783-6783; information here is also updated every 15 minutes.

The winter driving guide and winter operations guide, which are also available through this site, provide drivers with basic information about how PennDOT treats the roads in a variety of situations, as well as steps you can take to prepare your vehicle and an emergency travel kit.

This information is very valuable and will help motorists ensure that they are prepared when they get on the road this winter. If you haven't already done so, I encourage everyone to review PennDOT's new site and stay safe while driving.

DCNR State Parks Calendar on sale

For the first time ever, you can purchase a Pennsylvania State Parks calendar featuring breathtaking scenes from state parks.

In addition to the photographs, taken by some of the best photographers in the country, the calendar contains wildlife watching tips, facts about Pennsylvania State Parks and all holidays. The 16-month calendar also highlights state park information and activities and includes outdoor recreational facts and guidelines. Pictures can be viewed at www.dcnr.state.pa.us by clicking on "2008 Pennsylvania State Parks Calendar" along the right side of the page.

The calendar is $8.95, tax included, plus a charge for shipping, with all proceeds benefitting the state park system. To order a calendar, call toll-free at 1-888-PA-PARKS, or you can stop by any state park to pick one up as well.
