A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Legislation would help protect individual identity

Recently, the state Senate approved legislation which would make the practice known as "phishing" a crime in the Commonwealth.

Phishing occurs when a spam communication comes from what appears to be a legitimate business but is actually fake, and indicates that you must update your information via email, web site or phone call. Any personal information given to the fake business can then be used to steal an individual's identity.

Senate Bill 390 would create the offense of phishing, and also make it an offense to sell or distribute any personal information obtained fraudulently through this method. The state Attorney General would be granted concurrent jurisdiction to investigate and institute criminal proceedings as well.

If you are unsure whether a communication is legitimate, call the company using a number from a previous account statement, other letter or the phone book; if the original message was legitimate, the company will know what you are talking about and transfer you to the appropriate department.

I was pleased to support Senate Bill 390; this legislation now goes before the state House of Representatives for its consideration.

Connecting children with adoptive families

The Pennsylvania Adoption Exchange (PAE) plays a key role in bringing together children looking for loving homes and the families willing and able to provide them.

The organization's web site at www.adoptpakids.org helps recruit interested families and features a photo album of children in need of a home. Many children pictured face special circumstances – those who are older, in a siblings group, or have disabilities, for example.

PAE is a major component of the Statewide Adoption and Permanency Network (SWAN) and works with the county Children and Youth agencies. The program provides matching and referral services to help find the best possible fit for both adoptive families and children, and also serves as a comprehensive resource about the adoption process.

In 2006, SWAN received two national awards for achievements in finding permanent homes for Pennsylvania's foster children. Despite these accomplishments, though, many children are still searching for a family of which they can be a part. If you are considering opening your home and your heart to a child through adoption, I encourage you to visit the PAE web site, or call 1-800-585-SWAN for more information.

Hunting safety tips

With the fall hunting season in full swing, hunters can follow a few simple tips to have both a safe and enjoyable experience.

Hundreds of injuries happen each year due to preventable accidents caused by hazardous hunting practices. To help reduce these incidents, the Pennsylvania Game Commission reminds hunters of these basic safety pointers:

  • Always identify the target and fire only when you are certain it is safe to do so; do not point or shoot at sounds or movement, which may be other hunters

  • Wear the mandated amount of fluorescent orange clothing (see www.pgc.state.pa.us for information), and dress in layers that repel moisture, insulate, and block wind or rain

  • Create a hunting plan and let someone know where you are hunting and when you will return

  • Learn how to use a map and compass or a GPS unit, and carry a basic survival kit

In addition, you can obtain a 2007-08 Pocket Guide to Pennsylvania hunting seasons at the 36th District office at 301 E. Main Street, Lititz, or call 627-0036 to request to have one mailed to you.

I wish our hunters a successful and safe season!
