A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Take a hike this autumn

A great way to appreciate the beauty, wildlife and plant life of the autumn season is to take a hike on one of the state's 93 open rail trails, which include several in the 36th District.

For instance, the Lititz to Warwick bikeway is a 1.5-mile paved path, extending from Oak Street in Lititz to Clay Road in Warwick Township. More information is available at the Warwick Township web site, www.warwicktownship.org, by clicking on Parks and Recreation.

Not far away is the Lancaster Junction trail, a 2.5-mile cinder trail that runs from Champ Road near 283 in Landisville to Junction Road south of Manheim Borough. You can find more information about this trail at the Lancaster County Parks and Recreation web site, www.co.lancaster.pa.us/parks.

From Akron to Stevens, you can enjoy the one-mile Ephrata railroad linear park trail. For additional information, contact David Lloyd, Director of the Ephrata Recreation Center at 738-9270.

If you would like to experience one of the many other rail trails Pennsylvania has to offer, you can go online to www.gis.dcnr.state.pa.us/railtrails to see photos and interactive maps and plan your trip.

Ag and Rural Youth Grant applications available

Agricultural and rural youth grant applications are now available to help youth organizations enhance leadership development programs through innovative projects in agriculture, animal science, food safety and other agriculture-related topics.

Since 1992, this grant program has awarded more than $1.3 million to FFA, 4-H, agricultural extension and agricultural education organizations statewide.

These grants are an important investment in the future of agriculture, because they provide our young agricultural leaders with the skills and knowledge they will need to be successful.

The agricultural and youth grant program offers matching grants of up to $10,000 for capital projects and equipment purchases. Direct grants of up to $2,500 are also available for educational programs, seminars or field trips, as well as agricultural safety training programs, equipment purchases and capital projects.

Applications can be found online at www.agriculture.state.pa.us by clicking on "Students and Educators," then "PDA Agricultural Rural Youth Grant," or by contacting Eric Cowden at 717-346-4202 or ecowden@state.pa.us.

Prevention Works! Addresses substance abuse

The Council on Drug & Alcohol Abuse in Lancaster County can help businesses and companies address the issue of substance abuse through Prevention Works!

Although the majority of employees do not have substance abuse problems, those who do put themselves and their coworkers in danger; employees dealing with a family member's problem may also be distracted, tired and stressed. This can decrease productivity and increase absenteeism, accidents, injuries or violence in the workplace.

Prevention Works! enhances a company's current health promotion activities, Drug Free Workplace program and/or Employee Assistance Program benefits. If you would like to learn more about this program or others offered by the Council on Drug & Alcohol Abuse, contact Kathleen Herr, Director of Education and Training, at 299-2831, ext. 233 or kherr@dahelp.org, or visit www.dahelp.org.
