A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Trout season opens in southeast PA

Saturday, March 31, marked the opening of trout season in 18 counties across the south central and southeastern parts of the Commonwealth, two weeks earlier than the rest of the state.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission indicated that this earlier starting date is due to differences in climate across Pennsylvania. The ideal conditions for trout fishing occur earlier in the spring in the southern regions because of warmer temperatures, which also means that waters become too warm for trout fishing earlier than in northern regions, limiting the time that trout angling can be provided.

I had the privilege of enjoying the opening day of trout season myself, which was a fun and exciting experience. We saw many people out enjoying the spring weather, and I was pleased to see that almost everyone was enjoying a successful day.

I know that many of my constituents are interested in the state's Trout Stocking schedule for 2007, which is now available on the Fish and Boat Commission's web site at www.fish.state.pa.us. I have provided a link to the stocking schedule on my web site, www.senatorbrubaker.com, which you can reach by clicking State on the left side of the page under Resources/Links and then clicking Fishing. There are also a limited number of printed booklets available at my district office at 1248 W. Main Street, Ephrata.

Local programs to improve residential properties available

The Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority offers several programs to help enhance residential areas.

The Vacant Property Reinvestment Program encourages non-responsive property owners of blighted property outside of Lancaster city either to rehabilitate the property back into productive use or to face acquisition by the Redevelopment Authority. Municipalities can complete a property referral form detailing specific property information and submit it to the Authority.

More information about the Vacant Property Reinvestment Program is available by contacting the Community Development Assistant at 394-0793 or cd_assistant2@lchra.com.

In addition, the Authority offers the Homeowner Assistance Program to assist low-income homeowners with the costs related to curb/sidewalk installations and water/sewer connections required by local municipalities. This program provides a grant of up to $750 for these mandated improvements to those who meet the income eligibility requirements and live outside the city of Lancaster. The borough or township is responsible for having the application completed and submitting to the authority.

More information is available by calling 394-0793 or at finance.specialist@lchra.com.

April 15-21 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week

Since 1974, the third week of April has been recognized as Volunteer Appreciation Week across the United States in appreciation for the selfless donation of the time so many individuals offer their communities.

Approximately 61.2 million people volunteered their time with an organization between September 2005 and September 2006. These volunteers spent an average of 52 hours on such activities during the same time period, demonstrating an amazing commitment to public service.

For 2007, the honor falls during the week of April 15-21, with a theme of "Inspire by Example" this year. Over the past several months, I have had the privilege of meeting many individuals in the 36th District who serve as inspirations every day, and I want to offer my sincerest thanks to these people for the value they add to our lives.
