A Conversation with Senator Brubaker

Community Action Teams aid community development

Today, there are many communities working to revitalize their neighborhoods and Main Street areas through one of the many state grants and programs available for that purpose. In particular, the state’s Community Action Teams (CAT) can assist in every step of a plan to create a single point of contact for the many components of implementation.

The CAT program was developed to allow for coordination of resources and to maintain an open line of communication between agencies and departments to ensure that each community has access to the assistance it needs to reach its goals. A Strategic Investment Officer is assigned to each unique project to assess the plan, identify needs and review funding options, starting with non-state public and private sources but also including state funds if applicable.

The CAT has a strong record as a comprehensive community and economic development tool, helping to turn goals and visions into reality by collaborating with all interested stakeholders and creating solutions that fit each situation. More information is available at www.newpa.com or by calling 866-GO-NEWPA.

Governor’s Action Team helps Pennsylvania business

Another tool available to promote economic growth across the Commonwealth is the Governor’s Action Team. Through this program, businesses looking to locate or expand within Pennsylvania borders have the opportunity to utilize these professionals to create a perfect fit between themselves and their new homes.

In order to help a business decide among potential locations, the Governor’s Action Team evaluates information such as workforce characteristics, demographic information, infrastructure and utility data, local permitting and regulations and state and local tax information. The Team works with both domestic and international businesses, as well as professional site consultants and on projects involving significant investment and job creation opportunities. Lancaster County has reaped the benefits of the GAT program in recent years, as both GlaxoSmithKline and R.R. Donnelley & Sons have begun operations and created several hundred jobs.

The Governor’s Action Team headquarters are located in Harrisburg in the Commonwealth Keystone Building, and can be reached at 787-8199. Other information is again available through www.newpa.com or 866-GO-NEWPA.

Local business research assistance available

The Lancaster County Library System offers free business research assistance to anyone who finds themselves confused by the large amount of information available in today’s Information Age.

For instance, individuals who are unsure how to begin identifying clients and competitors, or those who are confused about how to put together a business plan, can find help through the Lancaster County Library. If you would like a one-on-one business database tutorial or a consultation directed toward your specific needs, you can contact Diane Pawling, Business Reference Librarian, at the Duke Street Business Center at the Lancaster Public Library by phone at 239-2131.

Also available is database training at your business, which again can be customized to suit your needs. For more information on this on-site training, contact Rhonda Kleiman, Business Information Coordinator, at 207-0500, ext. 1225.
