Brubaker Resolution Targets Cost Savings, Public Health Issues in Sewage Facilities Law
HARRISBURG – Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36) introduced a
resolution today that would examine the state's law governing sewage treatment
facilities to identify cost savings to taxpayers and better protect public
health and safety.
Senate Resolution 140 would direct the Legislative Budget
and Finance Committee to review the Commonwealth's sewage facilities management
program authorized under the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act. The state's
sewage facilities program, which is largely administered by municipalities with
assistance from the state Department of Environmental Protection, requires
proper planning of facilities, permitting and uniform design standards.
"Technology has dramatically changed how our sewage
facilities are planned, operated and managed, and a comprehensive review of this
program is necessary to ensure the law is keeping pace with this growth in
technology," Brubaker said. "Improving the planning and management of these
facilities will help identify cost savings for state and local governments as
well as improve the state's efforts to protect public health and the
environment."
