Brubaker Bill Proposes Sales Tax Exemption for Farm Building Materials
HARRISBURG – Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36) introduced
legislation today that would support Pennsylvania farm operations by creating a
sales tax exemption for certain farm building materials.
Senate Bill 1149 would exclude building materials used for the construction
or repair of animal production buildings from the state's sales and use tax.
Brubaker said the legislation would reduce building costs to producers and
improve the long-term viability of Pennsylvania's agricultural operations.
"To protect our farms and agricultural operations, it is
important to ensure that our producers can remain competitive with farms in
other states," Brubaker said. "Farmers in many neighboring states already
benefit from a similar exemption. This legislation would eliminate this
competitive disadvantage for our local farms."
"This exemption would be a small investment that could reap
enormous dividends by creating economic opportunities for producers to expand
and improve operations," Brubaker said.
"The Ag Coalition applauds Sen. Brubaker for his commitment
to agriculture in Pennsylvania and his leadership on this issue," said Ag
Coalition Chairman Jim Adams. "Because of higher costs in Pennsylvania, our
members are often forced to look at neighboring states when they consider
expanding operations. This piece of legislation will help lower building costs
for producers across Pennsylvania and enable them to grow business at home."
