HARRISBURG - Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36) today announced the winners of the Student Challenge program’s Memorial Day Essay Contest.

The winners are: Nick Fisher of Lititz Elementary, Julea Truskey of Highland Elementary, Alec Rapp of Adamstown Elementary, Michaela Smith of Park Elementary, Alex Rivera of Columbia Jr./Sr. High School, Vallesa Carollo of Columbia Jr./Sr. High School, Ryan Miller of Octorara High School, Abigail Butler of Octorara High School and Marilyn Ngo of Columbia Jr./Sr. High School.

The winners will receive an award certificate and a visit to the State Capitol in Harrisburg with a guest on June 17 for lunch and a tour of the Capitol.

"We received a number of thoughtful and interesting essays on the significance of Memorial Day during the competition, and I would like to thank all those who took the time to participate," Brubaker said. "I look forward to meeting with the young men and women who won this contest during their visit to the Capitol in June, and I encourage all students to participate in the summer Student Challenge to be announced next week."

The Student Challenge program features quarterly competitions that give students the opportunity to express their thoughts on various historical events and pieces of legislation. The challenges are open to all K-12 students in the 36th Senatorial District, including the school districts of Cocalico, Columbia, Conestoga Valley, Donegal, Eastern Lancaster County, Ephrata, Hempfield, Manheim Central, Octorara, Pequea Valley, Twin Valley and Warwick.
