For Immediate Release May is Beef Month in PennsylvaniaSenator Brubaker introduces resolution, speaks with Beef Task Force HARRISBURG – The state Senate has recognized the important contributions of Pennsylvania's beef industry by adopting a resolution introduced by state Senator Mike Brubaker (R-36) recognizing May 2008 as Beef Month in Pennsylvania. "I am proud to honor the contributions the beef and agriculture industries make to the Commonwealth," Brubaker said. "Not only does the beef industry provide high-quality and nutritious food to our citizens, but it also has a strong impact on our state and national economy and promotes sensible environmental practices on its ranches and farms." For instance, he noted, the 1.6 million beef cattle residing in the state alone contribute $2 billion to the economy, while beef and dairy cattle together make up almost 95 percent of the total value of livestock in the state. Brubaker, who serves as chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, also participated in an informational discussion with the newly formed Pennsylvania Beef Task Force today. The Task Force updated Committee members and staff on the industry, including beef quality assurance, animal welfare standards and the ongoing work to ensure a safe and reliable food supply. "Pennsylvania implements beef, dairy and veal quality assurance programs to train and certify cattle producers in best management practices," Brubaker said. "The cattle industry is committed and responsive to animal and human health issues, so all producers and consumers can know that any issues concerning food safety and illness can be addressed promptly, professionally and thoroughly." In addition, Brubaker said, all beef produced under the PA Preferred Program is certified by the Pennsylvania Beef Quality Assurance Program. Weis Markets, a Pennsylvania-owned company which operates many stores in the central Pennsylvania region, participates both in the PA Preferred Program and also carries beef produced by the Pennsylvania Beef Quality Assurance Program. The company will recognize Beef Month with an event at its Camp Hill location on Wednesday, and will also present its Pennsylvania Proud Choice Angus Beef products, all of which come from Commonwealth farms. Committee Director Kristin Crawford will be speaking at the event on Brubaker's behalf while he is in legislative session. "Our cattle industry has a strong commitment to producing a safe, high-quality product for consumers," Brubaker said. "I look forward to enjoying beef and the other fine products produced in our state not only this month, but all year long as well." Contact:
