Senator Brubaker presents Student of the Month award at Ephrata High School

EPHRATA – State Senator Mike Brubaker (R-36) visited Ephrata High School today to present senior Shawn McConnell with the Student of the Month award for May.

The Student of the Month program is coordinated through the Ephrata Area Chamber of Commerce, which honors senior business/technology students at Ephrata and Cocalico high schools. Students who are selected for the honor receive recognition from their school district, a sponsoring Chamber member, and faculty at the participating high school.

"Shawn is an excellent student who has already has a strong background in business through his coursework at Ephrata High School," Brubaker said. "He is very deserving of this award and he is a fine example of what our young men and women are capable of accomplishing."

In addition to his academic work, Shawn is a member of the varsity football team and works part-time at Sheetz. He will be attending Clarion University this fall, and is currently considering a career in accounting. He is the son of Dave and Tina McConnell of Ephrata.

"I believe Shawn has a bright future ahead of him as he pursues his goal of becoming an accountant, and I look forward to hearing about his success," Brubaker said.

Students who are selected for the award must maintain an above average academic record, take an active role in extracurricular activities, and be reliable, teamwork-oriented and approachable. They must also have taken or be taking at least two approved business/technology courses and indicate a desire for further education in business or technology.

"I am proud to be a sponsor of the Ephrata Area Chamber's program, because there are many students who should be recognized for their hard work," Brubaker said. "I commend each young person who receives these awards and each student who demonstrates a commitment to academic excellence."
