Giant Food StoresGiant Food Stores and our commitment to the fight against hunger From the corporate office down to each individual store, engagement in the local community is a strong part of the Giant culture. We focus our efforts on improving the lives of children and fighting hunger along with supporting other great charities and local groups. We work hard to be a good corporate citizen in every market we serve and support countless community efforts with our time, products and monetary donations.
Fighting Hunger It's a fact: in all of our communities, there are people who are hungry. We know that as a grocery store chain, the fight against hunger is an effort in which we can and must make a very big difference. While we do a great deal to help already, it's our corporate obligation to find even more ways to be part of the solution. Over the years, our programs and food drives have raised millions of dollars for hunger relief. The Giant Bag Hunger campaign invites customers to donate $1 at the check-out to raise funds for regional food bank partners.
Senior Health Fair In March 2008, Giant hosted the USDA at a food stamp press event with an emphasis on seniors and food stamps. Following the press conference held in the produce section with the USDA Undersecretary for Food and Nutrition Services and 60 seniors, GIANT hosted a mini-health fair for our senior customers and helped determine their eligibility for food stamps.
In addition to our fundraising efforts, we also have food donation programs in place, donating bakery items from our stores to local pantries and soup kitchens on a regular basis. At holiday time, we provide turkeys and hams to families who otherwise would not be able to afford a holiday meal. In these times of rising food and gas prices, Giant has also strengthened our relationship with regional food bank partners, leveraging supplier relationships and assisting with administrative costs of running the food bank. For example,
Total number of meals that these efforts will conservatively support are more than 500,000!!!
In January 2009, Giant donated $50,000 to the Central PA Food Bank fore the specific purpose of supporting Kids Cafes across their 27-county region.
Additionally, Giant associates volunteer in one of the many opportunities to further assist the Central PA Food Bank. In March 2009, Giant donated nearly 10,000 hams to regional food banks and local hunger organizations across our four-state operating area. According to food bank representatives, these hams provided approximately an Easter holiday meal for 75,000 neighbors.
